Consider this: coca is not the same as cocaine. The coca is a plant that plays an important role in traditional Andean culture. The coca leaves, when they’re chewed by the andean people, act as a mild stimulant and supress hunger, thirst, pain and fatigue. And it’s not recent: traces of coca have been found in mummies dating 3000 years ago, when it was viewed as having a divin origin. Is it ok? good. If you have traveled to Peru and have some coca leaves, you can prepare this traditional liquor. The recipe is for 8 people.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups of pisco
  • 1/2 kg of coca leaves
  • 8 cups of water
  • 1/2 kg (1 ob) of sugar

Preparation:

Soak the half of the leaves in pisco for 3 days. Then drain and boil all the leaves (including the non-soaked) for 2 hours on a low flame.

Drain and let it cool down. Don’t waste the water, it’s the coca water. Take the half of the coca water and boil it with the sugar for 30 minutes. Let it cool down and mix with the rest of the water and the pisco. Filter and serve with the meals: it’s an excellent digestive.
